CASE STUDY 6
FINDING ZEST FOR LIFE AT ANY AGE
This client was a working psychologist. He came to me because he could not find joy. Nothing about life excited him and he was instead just going through the motions, despite having financial and career success and a loving family.
Our focus was to find his natural enthusiasm. Through our work together, he discovered the ways he had been holding himself back. He had beliefs about being a man. That he had to be a stoic provider who should not have or express their needs. In this paradigm, it did not allow my client to feel his emotions, so he could not feel the joy or desire for life. In identifying the beliefs, he was able to separate from them and begin to feel how rich life was. He let go of control and his heart opened. He found himself smiling a lot more and naturally moving towards what he wanted.
At one point he looked at me and said “if life has a score, it is meant to be a musical, not a competition.”
He started to find fun and zany activities to do with his grandkids. He would come back to me beaming about what a great time they had. He took up weightlifting at 72 and entered a national competition. His biggest source of pride wasn’t that he came in 3rd, but that he tried something entirely new in his life.
